RE: BIOPTRON Light

In response to our recent conversation regarding the use of polarized light via the Bioptron light therapy system, I wish to clarify our current usage at the Burns Unit at Concord Hospital.

Since its inception here at the Burns Unit we have successfully employed the technology of polarized light therapy on several hundred patients with chronic non-healing wounds. This is undertaken as a routine adjunct in our wound care and there is no billing connected to this service as it is undertaken during the routine dressing changes.

This is not a first-line treatment in our regime, rather we apply the technique as an adjunct to wounds we find problematic and slow or non-healing. This includes previously grafted wounds and non-healing donor sites from skin graft harvesting procedures. There are no complaints of patients to note and as we monitor the ongoing treatment and long-term outcomes (over years) we have not recorded any side effects or discomfort on any of our patients.
